Keep in mind that Canon has changed how and whether the shutter count can be obtained. Some 'reader software' can work with DIGIC versions w to y, but not z. Refer to any available documentation for the candidate software and assure your specific EOS model is clearly listed before paying for anything, even a small payment.

The corresponding webpage looks promising, as this app is for Canon, Nikon, and Sony. A specific camera compatibility chart is provided.

Have you actually employed it yourself, billnikon? I presume that if so, you tested it only on Nikon models.

Hey, hoggers - please recommend a free/inexpencive shutter count program for Canon - Thanks in advance.

I am a Nikon user so I can't speak to Canon with authority, but on Nikons the shutter count is part of the metadata file. If you take a picture and then drag and drop the file on a website such as http://myshuttercount.com/ or http://metapicz.com/#landing you can find the shutter count if your camera records it in the metadata.

Canon does not embed the shutter count in the EXIF data.

I agree eoscount.com but the last time I used the service it was $2.29. Tried others with little success for my cameras. I don't mind paying a small fee each time. Just how often do you really need to check your shutter count? I only do when I decide to sell.

It isn't found in Canon EXiF data.

I think we just read a "cyber echo".
