Over the years I have shied away from shooting with high ISO and relied on adjusting the other two legs of the triangle. I recently decided to test the high ISO (for me) world. I read articles that said the most my Nikon D610 could handle was ISO 3200 but shot this at ISO 4500. I expected huge amounts of digital noise but was pleasantly surprised at the reasonable noise levels.

I'm not sure if I want to see noise, but defects seldom appear at low resolution shots. Noise will become more noticeable when you are straining the parameters. As this shot is in bright light with a wide open aperture, there should be sufficient light to reduce any noise.

How does it look at full size?

Thanks for the feedback. It was shot at 1/640, f/11, 550mm, handheld with a Tamron 150-600 mm. At 100% magnification it does not degrade. In the eye I can see the clouds, sky and the railing on which they are sitting.

Attaching the image would probably better satisfy the request and confirm what appears accurate from the thumbnail.

That is a great example but why would you shoot higher than normal iso other than trying to get a faster shutter speed?

I should say...very acceptable

Previously I never shot at higher ISO but I had admired work done by others when they chose to shoot at elevated ISO settings so I thought I would do some testing to see how my equipment would perform at higher ISO. I had always been concerned about high ISO noise but I just decided to follow Captain Kirk and go where I had never gone before

and smaller aperture - reasons enough from my POV.

I limit my Pentax KP to ISO=12500, but seldom go above 6000.

Incidentally, noise is not the only problem with higher ISO values, which also reduce Dynamic Range and Color Depth.

A bit of noise in a shot is, IMHO, preferable to a missed or blurred shot.

If not a lot of shadows high ISO will not have much effect on noise.
