One of my main purposes in taking my group to the South Tirol of Italy was to visit Tirolo Castle. The pano here shows the castle. The village of Tirolo is to the right and the city of Merano is out of the frame to the left.
This castle is the source of the name of the Austrian province of Tirol. The Counts of Tirol moved from here to Innsbruck in 1429 to better control the trade route across the Inn River, making Innsbruck the capital of all of Tirol. (The normal English spelling is Tyrol, but to me that is just weird.)
The second photo is simply of the castle itself. The hillsides there are covered with apple orchards and a few vineyards. The freshly-pressed apple juice sold there is the best I have ever had.

Breathtaking location! Can you imagine what it must have taken to build that castle at that location?
