Having trouble downloading full large Sony XQD G cards (128 and 256GB) to Apple iMac. Anyone else? Crashes. Using Sony's dedicated XQD loader that works fine for SD cards. Ideas? I also see Amazon has, at least for now, discontinued selling these Sony cards. Why?

Information regarding XQD memory cards is available at Nikon’s website. XQD cards are available in a variety of sizes from B&H Photo, Amazon, Delkin, San Disk, Lexar, etc. Card readers for XQD cards are available at similar sources. Perhaps large XQD cards don’t work well in SD card readers that were not designed for them.

I believe they are no longer made.

The new ones are 120 and 240. There was a change in the technology a while back.

I've had no problem with this. I use a 128GB sony card and a sony reader. There are, or were, two types of Sony readers. I assume yours is a "G" reader. I use a sony M & G card reader and a Lexor reader and both work fine so far. Have you tried a different card reader?

How much of the cards can you d/l? It is always possible that you have down loaded everything and there was less than you remembered.

If you are crashing while trying to d/l I would try to do it in stages. Open the card on your computer and view the properties. That should give the files of everything and there should be some folders. Down load the folders in stages.

After everything is off your card, I would format it and then check it for errors. It is possible there is a bad sector that is causing things to hang.

I found that downloading large numbers of large photo files was a problem on my iMac but only when I used a USB hub. When I had the card reader plugged into the hub and was transferring to a hard drive that was also plugged into the hub, the transfer was very slow with constant crashes. Apple is very, very stingy with the number of USB ports on the back of the computer but I cleared two slots and transferred with the card reader and the hard drive both plugged into the back of the computer and it went much faster with no crashes at all. I hope this helps!

There are many things you need to look into. One, which was not mentioned, was the destination of the files being loaded to your iMac. To avoid filling its limited storage, I store all my photo files on an external storage device. Without more specific information, I can't comment more than that. Best of luck.

I've been using a SONY 32GB XQD G card for about a year, and have never had any problems downloading images on it to my Macbook Pro Photos application using a SONY XQD / SDXC II card reader. A quick check on Amazon shows these cards are available in 32, 64, 120 and 240 sizes, so the 128 and 256GB cards you have may have been discontinued. Maybe you should check the SONY web site and see if there are any comments about problems with the 128 and 256GB cards. Does your iMac recognize the SONY reader and XQD card when you plug it in for a download?

turns out the solution was that I needed to download a new driver from Sony for my Apple. After doing that, the XQD works just fine! The Sony reader btw does read SD cards just fine without the new driver. Now it reads both fine. The cards listed are both still considered current according to Sony. Interesting tho if they've now gone away from those pretty standard in the industry sizes, thanks, wonder why....
