I have read and read the manual , but still am not satisfied with all of the results I get. Can someone please advise me on the best settings for birds in flight?

You have many suggestions there. They should help. there is probably nothing wrong with your equipment. A close friend of mine has the same camera and lens, and gets great pictures once he got some instruction from an experienced shooter. Some one else I know online has a Nikon and the Nikkor 150-600mm Zoom. She is still learning. Personally I never touch anything longer than 300mm. And basically shoot lenses from 16mm to 200mm 99% of the time. I'm rarely even trying wildlife or sports.

Use this, GROUP AUTO FOCUS, continuous auto focus, center weighted metering. Shot at least 1/2500 sec. at one stop down from wide open.
And, personally do not like that lens for birds in flight. I use the Nikon 200-500 5.6 and get much better results at 500 mm. That lens is questionable at 600 mm.

Works fine for me...did you see my post, all at 600mm...
