Anyone have actual experience with the Tamron 90mmF/2.8 DI 1:1 macro for Nikon? Looking to buy a macro in this range and would like to have the opinions of those who have actually used this lens.

Whilst I have never used the Tamron 90mm 2.8 DI macro I will make a comment.

As a Nikon shooter of macro for many years I have only used Nikon macros and much of what I have learnt has been by looking at and studying the images of others. What is clearly evident is that the Tamron 90 produces absolutely superb images on a par with Canon and Nikon in the hands of well experienced shooters.

Have a look at somewhere like Flickr Tamron 90........ group and see firsthand what it can produce.

I was all set to take exception with the "only canikon" bandwagon. Well said Grahame, the Tamron is a superb lens and like any bit of gear, superb "in the right hands". I own one, it is awesome and particularly at the price. Buy with confidence.

I have that lens and it is a superb macro lens. I like that it’s long enough to be able to get a little distance from the subject.

I have owned the Tamron 90 F2.8 macro for 2 years and have had nothing but superb results with it on my Nikon D810's and my D850. Many of the purists will tell you to stick with Nikon but given the comparable quality and dollar difference, the Tamron comes out the winner.

Can't speak for the Nikon version. I've had the Canon version for over a year and love it. If you can find one for a good deal, nab it! Worth every penny.

A friend of mine had me convinced to buy the Tokina 100mm. A bit sharper. The price was holding me back. Then I came across the Tamron in a pawnshop. Like new in the box. Hood and everything. 150.00, tax included out the door. Couldn't resist. No regrets.

I have one and agree with all the good comments. The only thing to watch for (and this is common for a lot of modern lens - just be aware because it might mean you can't use it for some things) is the lack of a manual f stop. This makes reversing it a pain in the butt. Fortunately (although this depends on your point of view) the bigger pain in the butt was the inability of the camera to hold the shutter open for the times I needed. It gets hot and shuts down. But that isn't the Tamrons fault.
Its great if your use is as a standard macro lens.

I think this is a great macro lens. I also use it as my prime lens for portraits. Very sharp.

I use this lens and it is as good as anything on the market and it is a good price. I would make sure you get the latest one as it is much better than the first version

Have this lens for Nikon....fantastic lens, superb resolution and contrast. Also great for portrait or any other subject in the 90mm range. But you should also look at these choices before deciding, depending on which body you are attaching to (d3xxx, d5xxx, d7xxx, d6xx, d7xx, d8xx, etc?):

Tokina 100/2.8 (has older AF mech but great optics - AF will not work on the d3xxx, d5xxx)
Nikon 60mm/2.8 D type - many great used deals from Japan on eBay...ditto for AF)

I bought the Tamron based on test comps in Nphoto mag...but will eventually try the 2 above.

Please consider the Nikon 105mm 2.8 G.
If your basing it on price, mint used are available on ebay for a low as $400.00.
New, the Nikon runs on sale at B&H at $806.00. The Tamron is offered at $649.00. That is about a $150.00 difference.
If, after a few years, you wanted to sell either one, the Nikon would sell much higher than the Tamron, much higher.
Bottom line, the Nikon is IMHO a much better lens in build and image quality. But, do not take my word for it, read the reviews on both. They will give you the information you need to make your decision.

Had it, returned it as it was not any better than any of others. As Macro is my niche (I own 9 true macro lenses from 55 to 180mm in length, some AF, others MF, from Nikon, Sigma, Tamron, Vivitar, Spiratone & Lester Dine) I speak from experience. For what it's worth, they will all deliver good images as long as you have the proper technique. Differences among them are more so about features, build and resale values. While there are some optical differences, only a bench test will discern them. Personally, I prefer an older 105mm Macro from my film days...

The Tamron is a very good performer but why not a Micro Nikkor? Remember, it was made specifically for use in your camera and retail value when you decide to sell will be higher.
