Can anybody give me some afvice. My grandaughters 16th birthday is coming up and she wants a camera. What is a good camera to start off with? We were looking at a Canon DSLR Rebel.

The Canon Rebel should be fine for her.

The good news is that you can't buy a bad camera, and the Rebel should be fine. To play it safe, you might want to look at other models and then read comparisons.

Even though I am a Nikon person I think the Rebel you have chosen will be an excellent gift. It is a great camera.

The "i" version Rebels have more options/capabilities than the plain.
Since I currently use a T1i, I'd opt for the T7i or T6i, depending on what you want to pay.
The i version should do well for her for years.

I myself, after extensive research 2.5 years ago, chose a Used Nikon D3300. This camera has produced superb images.
I would suggest as a first lens, a 50mm 1.8, that lens gets excellent reviews.
Consider Used or Refurbished Camera and lens, save money, make sure the sincere interest in Photography is present before you spend the big Bucks.

payton88, The Canon Rebel is a good choice, but if you know what direction she wants to take with photography (think on future investment n lenses), there are other choices to consider (other brands) as well. I'm a Nikon shooter but I'm not against Canon. They have great DSLRs and fantastic lenses as well.

It really depends on a variety of factors: What is her level of interest? What is your budget? A good bridge camera might be a good start, or even something similar; on the other hand, if she is really interested in the hobby, the Canon, or the Nikon D3500 are good choices, as are other manufacturers' entry level cameras.

You'll want to discuss it more with her. Does she want something that will fit in her jeans pocket that can be in the car glove box to be grabbed at any moment, taken to the party and the beach and the game and the class trip etc, or does she want a interchangeable lens giant that has to carried around the neck? We can recommend either way, but a compact camera that is going to be used is better than an better quality paperweight.

Excellent point and suggestion. Canon’s G9X Mark II and others brands / models in this category have all the same 'insides' as the entry level DLSRs, just not the interchangeable lenses. They cost almost as much too, but slide onto most any pocket being the size of a deck of cards.

"My grandaughters 16th birthday is coming up and she wants a camera." Mine did that two years ago. She got a "brand name" two lens kit with bag from Costco. Costco has wonderful return policies if you screw up and guess her dreams wrong.

Although I shoot Canon, there is no such thing as a bad camera. Let her start with the basics. She needs to learn the exposure truancy and the rule of nine. I started to learn that way. Pick up a couple of books on how to photograph. She can't go wrong. Pick up a few books by some accomplished photographers. Let her see what she can be capable of and what will inspire her. Then let her post her work here.

The Mighty Ugly Hedge Hog is a great place to share and learn and grow!!
