The Hog turns up in 4-H Photography competition.

Wednesday I judged South Dakota State Fair 4-H Photography. I usually judge the animal categories because that is my specialty. After stacks of photos of cats, dogs, horses, cows, birds, bugs, zoo animals (front and back end of all of them), up pops a perfectly focused hedge hog being held in someone's hands. Not something we normally see in South Dakota. Unfortunately, it had a pole coming out of it's head in the background so it didn't get a top award. Just thought you hoggers would like to know that there is a real one alive and well in SD.
Nuts! I coulda submitted this. No pole!

Does your age qualify you for 4-H membership?
Aww, this photo is so cute! So, can you tell me, what photo won? And what was the age grou? Cheryl

4-H Members can be anywhere from 8-18. There are several classifications depending on age. Beginners, Juniors and Seniors. I'm not sure where the ages break. There is no one winner at State Fair. There are several different categories the kids can enter and each is judged separately. The best award is a Purple ribbon, then blue, red and white has to be really bad. There can be more than one purple ribbon depending on the how good the photos are. At South Dakota State Fair, judges are told to set aside what they consider WOW photos that are outstanding. From those, twelve are selected for a 4-H calendar. This year, I probably gave fewer purple ribbons and that seemed consistent with all of the judges. To get to State Fair, they must receive a purple ribbon at a local county fair. This year there were a lot of photos that should not have made it out of the county because they just weren't good enough to make it to state. That tells us state fair judges that some local judges are not qualified to be judging photography at any level.
Oh my goodness!! Sooo cute! I used to have a hedgehog...loved it's soft little tummy! But the prickles can hurt if you don't hold it right, lol! :)
And I'm sure too old for 4-H (did that, too!)...but open-class would work!

Just one question, do the stickers appear after the birth of one of these critters? Ouch! that could hurt!
Cute photo!
Who says hedgehogs are ugly?
I don't know what the prickers are like when they are little, as I only had an adult one...but yes, you definitely have to handle them carefully, because the prickers DO hurt! :) But their tummies are wonderfully soft!! :)
