I just bought a Canon EOS 10S and I am having trouble taking pics. When I take the film in the first roll did not come out at all and the second roll only had 6 photos that came out. Is it me or do you think it is the camera? I was wondering if I was loading the film correctly but the count comes up and after the roll finishes it rewinds. Any thoughts? Would appreciate any help!!!!

How old is the film and what make/type is it?
Sacrifice a roll of old film. Run it half way through and open the back of the camera to see if the film is advancing.
Check your lense aperture, camera shutter (does it open/close with back open; you'll see it move, but DON'T touch it) and mirror (does it pop up before the shutter fires; does the viewfinder black out for every shot)?

To check if the film is advancing, on the left side of the camera on top, there is the rewind crank. As you are advancing a new roll of film, that should be turning each time you crank the film advance lever. After you have advanced to #1, use the rewind crank to take the slack out of your film. If you do not soon meet resistance, your film didn't load properly. Your first roll may have not loaded but the second did or you would not have gotten any shots at all. Before loading your next roll, with that back open and the lens cap off, open the aperture up as far as it will go and, while holding the camera up so you can see through it, click the shutter and look to see if you can see through the lens when it fires. If not, or if only occasionally, I'd say you have a problem. To isolate the problem to the camera or the lens, borrow another lens - go to a camera store, whatever. Repeat the test with the second, known to be good lens, to see if you can duplicate the problem. If you duplicate the problem, it's likely to be in the body. If you do not duplicate the problem, it's most likely the lens. It can be either or both. It is essential to check the rewind spool for tension which shows the film is connecting the advance and rewind spools - EVERY TIME you load a new roll of film. The counter will advance whether the film does or not.

Mogul, I did what you said and the film is advancing properly but the camera shutter is not opening every time. It opened fine for a few clicks and then not at all. It looks like something is on the shutter on one side. The viewfinder blacks out for every shot. Is there anything I can clean the shutter with? It looks like oil or some liquid. Thank You for responding, I really hope I can fix this.

Sandy, keep in mind that you only paid $5.98 for the camera and two lenses and some filters. If the camera never works again you still got a great bargain. Go ahead and try to clean the shutter. You have nothing to lose.

If you have one of those brushes with an air bulb try that first. If it is an oily substance that probably won't work. Try a q-tip dipped in alcohol. Squeeze the excess alcohol out before trying to clean. Clean applying very gentle pressure where you see the substance.

Some other UHHers may have a better solution.

Just a note, CVS can put your 35mm film on a CD and have it ready for you in just an hour!!!No extra charge!!!!They also carry 35mm film, B & W and Color. They have a sale on Kodak Color film, $6.99 for 4/24 400 film!!!!Again, THANKS for ALL YOUR HELP!!!!
