will be visiting sister in Colorado Springs, CO end of September into October. Looking for photo ops.
Garden of the Gods. Air Force Academy.. Pikes peak cog train. to name a few.
Go up into the mountains above Colorado Springs. Woodland Park and west. It shouldn't be too late in the year. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL high mountains scenics, Aspens, lakes etc. Just watch out for early winter weather, you could be stuck until spring.

Garden of the Gods, especially good for sunrise.
Aiken Canyon Preserve, good hikes through red rock formations.
Paint Mines Interpretive Park. You've never seen anything like this place.
Devils Head. A moderate drive out of town.
Manitou Springs and Cog Railway. Touristy town on the edge of Colorado Springs; the railway is a cool ride.
Cripple Creek. Old mining town converted into a gambling town. A bit of a drive, but if you have time take the southern route into town; it's a windy dirt road that is really scenic.
Royal Gorge Bridge (and Railway). A full day experience, but totally awesome. A cog train goes down to the river. The bridge has an awesome overlook. The Railway is a great scenic train ride including a trip on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway.
I just returned from there having visited my daughter and grandchildren. Unfortunately the Pikes Peak cog train is out of service until next year. You might take a drive up US24 through the mountains and check out Cripple Creek, an old mining town that has been turned into a tourist attraction.

If you don't visit/tour The Broadmoor Hotel while there, you're missing the best of downtown CS.

Unfortunately, the PP cog train is currently not operating (for renovation... I think) until next year. You can still drive up, however.
Late Sept. and early Oct. are in the heart of the Colorado fall color season which is spectacular. The areas with Aspen tree color change as the season progresses, highest altitudes first moving to lower altitudes as the season goes on. Google the subject for lots of into, including up to date reports and maps showing the peak locations by dates. There are places within easy drives of Colorado Sprints. It's a real treat.
The Air Force Academy Chapel is worth visiting, however, I believe they will be starting a renovation that will take three years. Not sure when it is starting, but Google it and you can find out.
I agree The Broadmoor is worth visiting.
I agree with all the other suggestions - enjoy our city.
Ditto on Garden of the Gods.
This is from the visitor center looking into the Garden area. Definitely go in and walk around.

Hi Bob,
would you be interested in the high country?
Just a snapshot. Late September, Pikes Peak.

I second the suggestion of the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, which is 3/4 the way up on Cheyenne Mountain. It is a private zoo, and very, very well maintained. It is only about a mile away from the Broadmoor, and above it is the Will Rodgers shrine.
