I have found a couple of these spiders in the yard and just wondering what kind it is. It is scary looking and I hope I never walk into one's web at night. The main body is about 1-1/4 inch with a leg spread in this picture of about 6 inches.
Not sure but I have them on my property, too.
Golden silk orbweaver (Trichonephila clavipes). They go by other common names like banana spider, etc. Very big, but harmless unless you are an insect or maybe a small bird.

This is an orb weaver.
Family Araneidae.
Probably Nephila clavipes. The Golden silk spider.
Oops, Mark was first. Thanks for the name update, Mark.
Bill
Thanks all for your replies, but bingo to Mark. With the name you gave, I did a Google search and found out you are right and found a picture that had been taken and posted just a few miles from here.
Catch a grasshopper and toss it onto the web and watch. Fascinating.
Cool-looking spider. You're probably lucky to have it on your property. The orb weavers here are big fat things.
I do believe it’s a spider.
Nice photo of the what-is-it.

Well I have an ant colony in my back yard. If it's hungry, then I have a 1,000 course dinner waiting!
Thanks everyone for your responses. As long as my wife does not see it. She would never go outside again.
