My first Scorpion Fly, I found this on the roof of the greenhouse so big crop.

Beautiful rendering, Brenda.
This is a female, by virtue of no appendage. The Male has a scorpion-like feature on the posterior end. Use?
As to biting? Not normal, maybe if held.
This looks to be genus Panorpa.

Thanks George, no I don't believe they bite and neither do they sting. The name comes from the male's tail which looks like that of a Scorpion but it is for mating not stinging.

Thanks Bill, I understand the male's tail has 2 hooks which are used for holding the female during mating. I was thrilled to find this, I have wanted to see one for ages.

They are lovely over there! They have no weapons. The scorpionflies I know favor shady areas, and I regularly see them sitting on the low plants along forest trails and forest margins.
