Found this in town today. He was about the size of a small hawk. He was very nervous of anyone getting close to him. I have never seen this bird before and don't even know what to type in to search to find out what he is. Anyone have any ideas?

Alma, I agree that it is a Green Heron. They are very pretty and often shy.

Thank you all.... We have definitely got a Green Heron here. First one I have ever seen in our area, and found him right in town at the lake at the park. YES!

Green Heron, for sure.

Wonderful birds, probably my favorite of all. If you ever get the opportunity to observe a family during the breeding season I highly recommend it.
