After a purchase, I received a dollar bill as change. It was beat up, had wear and tear and something else. On it was a stamped, "Find out where this dollar bill has been at
www.where's George.com." This seemed strange and intrigued me enough to invest some of my spare time. I strolled around the website and noticed it was very elaborately designed to track a dollar bill and log yourself in as well. A little birdie on top of computer monitor started chirping and wouldn't stop. It seemed odd that someone would go to such an extreme to set up this website. Then, I remembered something about writing on U.S. Currency. You are not allowed but everyone does it. It is readily available paper for writing. I asked some friends and they too did not feel comfortable about all of this. We speculated that this website installs malware and/or spyware onto your computer. We are not really sure and we would like to have some confirmation whether we are correct or wrong! In the end, we decided to let everyone we know about this dubious website.
So as we chit-chat about scams, I wanted to let my fellow Hoggers to steer clear of this questionable website.
Sounds terribly suspicious - thanks for the warning.

My anti-virus/malware program sounds all sorts of warning and pretty much will not let me visit dangerous sites or "run" malware. Yes, the situation you describe does sound dodgy.
https://www.wheresgeorge.com/ is a site that's been around for years. For those who want to take the time to input the serial number of one dollar bills and find where that bill has been, or let them know where the one you have is, it's a bit of fun. Nothing nefarious about it.

I have used it for many years. I have never run into any malware on the site. You used to get dollars stamped "Where's George" but very seldom any more.

Maybe the rubber stamp wore out?
The circulation lifetime of a 1 dollar bill is fairly short, between 18 months and 6 years before it's worn out. I don't know who determines just when a dollar bill is worn out, probably your local bank.

If there is nothing suspicious or nefarious about it, please accept my apology. However it is still illegal to mark or write on US Currency.

(It's illegal to do a lot of things.....)
You'll have to take that up with The U.S. Treasury Dept.

The way I heard it, it is illegal to
deface US currency.
Another unenforceable law. How are they going to figure out who did the defacing (or writing)?
I should be a guest of the state for all the pennies I flattened on train tracks in my youth.😁😁😁

When I was a kid various tourist spots had a machine into which you could insert a penny and a dime. The machine would flatten the penny and transmogrify it into something advertising the tourist spot. It kept the dime for its efforts.
I actually saw one of these machines somewhere in my travels within the last year. I think it needed a quarter instead of a dime.
