small-town America mentality

Recently I traveled to Edgefield, SC with my son. He was creating another episode of Our Town for SCETV. I was amazed how the residents of Edgefield had that “small-town America” mentality that’s so rare today. You could see the pride they had in their little town when they talked to you, how the town square was taken care of, and how clean they kept it. It reminded me of my hometown in the late fifties and early sixties. Please enjoy the video.

That is an interesting and great video. Bravo to your Son for His work. I have one question; please ask your Son if He knows what and whose music that was playing when They started talking about the distillery in the beginning part. I would like to buy that if I can find it. Love that type of music. Looks like the kind of town I live in.

There are lots of places like that across the U.S. city folks don't know about, that's the way we like it. When a place gets discovered it's not good. The newcomers move there because they like the way it is then proceed to make it just like the place they moved from. I never have figured that one out.

Thank you for a very enjoyable video. Another gift of Edgefield to the world is J. Drew Lanham who is (or was) Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology at Clemson University. His videos on Birding and nature in general are excellent. He has written a book (The Home Place) about his early years at Edgefield. He is definitely worth a google search.

Small town America mentality has two side to it. You show the good side. The dark side-xenophobe, narrow minded, bigoted of all kind. Don't like change.

What you say is true, but is true across the whole range of this country from small towns to large cities. This particular video was not about that aspect of the situation. I was raised on an Iowa farm, but went to school in small towns. i have seen a whole gamet of behavior. What was your background with regard to small towns?

Move to a small town in 1957. In March of 1966 moved. Back in Jan. 1969 to go to small two year college( Small in 1969, not today.) Sept 1971 to June 1973 move to a four year state college. Back in June of 1973 to Jan. 977 Graduate school and teaching. Move to New York City in Jan. 1977. Live in New York City unit Nov. 1990. Back Nov. 1990 up to today. So one can said I have seen the best of small town America and the best of New York City. Also the dark side of both place.
