Lens Opinion? Nikon DX.
This is posted merely for research. I am about to embark on another trip. I'm getting tired of toting around a bunch of lenses when I find I use one more than the others. That one is a Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-140mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED VR affixed to a D7500 body. It was one of the lenses that came with my D7100 when I bought it (I think most people got a 18-105mm or 18-200mm) and it's been nothing short of terrific!
So, I was wondering, if I were to take a newer one "walking around lens" that would cover most city scenes and times of day, is there a better (more flexible) lens now than when I got mine? For the record, I've had it since 2014.
I recently bought an 18-300mm for my D7200 and absolutely love it! I grab it more often than I do my D750 with the 24-120mm lens.

That's probably the one I was closest to looking at. How is it in terms of heft? Will it fit into a compact camera bag?

It’s 2 ounces heavier than the 18-140mm. I don’t think it’s much longer than what you’ve got, so it should fit. You could always look up the specifics for each lens and compare. I carry my D7200 with lens attached, and maybe an extra lens “just in case” in my LowePro backpack and have enough room.
That 18 - 140 lens is the best kit lens I have ever used. I don't think you can beat it unless you want to pony up the bucks for a faster lens in roughly the same zoom range.

Thanks for your continued responses. I checked out the lens at Adorama. I used to be a V.I.P. there, but since Helen left, I'm not sure (I do have Shoprunner membership though, so it may wind up the same). After a $70 "instant rebate," the cost comes to $626.95 (US). I have to decide if the extra length (140mm to 300mm) is worth it. And then I have to sell the 18-140, since the two are pretty darn close.
Choices, choices.

I'm not sure there is a similar, but faster lens. Of course, you say "pony up the bucks," so maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.

While I have other lenses, I carry an older 28-200 on a D7200, and an 18-300 on a D500.
Both have worked well for me as walk around. Lately I have had a tendency to use the
D500 more.

Tamron 18-400.
I saw that. Only $25 more than the 18-300 Nikon at Adorama. I've heard good things about Tamron lenses, but have no experience with them.
Add a wide angle, a long lens and a normal fast lens with the lens you already have, you'll be set for 99% of anything you may want to shoot.
Something like;
TOKINA 11-16mm F2.8 PRO DX II for wide angle
Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G DX AF-P ED for long range shots (there are better ones but also much higher piced)
Nikon Nikkor AF-S 35mm f/1.8G DX for a general purpose low light situation
or Nikon Nikor Lens AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D which is less wide but better for portraits than the 35mm but will work only on your D7100

I tried my wife's copy on her D7100 and D500. It has several thousand shots from Yellowstone, etc, and is a decent all around lens. It has been mentioned numerous times here on the forum.

I only travel with the Sony HX99. Has a 24-750 mm Zeiss lens, a pop up viewfinder for great outdoor shooting, HDR at 6 stops and a pop up flash for TTL balanced flash. Oh, did I mention it also shoot RAW and I get beautiful 20X30 prints.

I think you missed the point of my post. I already have all those lenses (wide angle, medium zoom, prime, long zoom). My intent is for one "do it all" (or almost all). But thanks for your input.
I had the Nikkor 18-200 and used it everywhere , it was the perfect lens . When I went FF I had to get Nikkor 28-300
