Has everyone seen the specs on the new Sony Rx100 VII? Promises to be the best little travel camera ever. 1 inch sensor, 24-200 lens, super fast video, all in a pocketable little body.

Oh, It's amazing...until the next version. Just kidding. If a camera is a great image maker today, it will make the same great images in a few years.

I have the Sony RX-100 VI and the new VII is almost the same specs. Sony made enhancements in taking movies and added a mike port (but has no way of attaching the mike to the camera). There are early reviews on uTube on this camera. For me there is not enough changes between these two models that would entice me to the VII.

Ken Rockwell will give you quite the data dump on this camera.

I always question the motivation for purchasing a “travel camera” we as photographers spent agonizing hours getting the best gear we can get that make great images why when we travel would anyone want to go on vacation to places around the world taking a camera we know won’t/can’t capture as good images as our everyday camera can?

Old news. This has already been discussed here. In case you missed it, you can always archive it.

No doubt this marvelous camera has some fine specs. Not sure, however, I would want only a 200mm reach for my travel camera.

NOT SO. My Sony HX99v shoots raw. I can get sharp clear 20X30 competition prints. It can equal my D850 in IQ.
Why take gear that just slows you down. When I travel, I want to enjoy myself, I do not need anything more than my pocket Sony, which I can put in a belt pouch and go hands free. I can hold my wife's hand and enjoy myself at the same time. I see a shot, my HX99 comes out, I pop up the wonderful viewfinder, acts like my D850, the zoom is Zeiss 24-750 mm, has a pop up flash that does auto fill flash, a 6 stop HDR and RAW. Please folks, TRAVEL RIGHT, TRAVEL LITE.

No argument here and no offense intended.
Except when I travel with my friend and our wives I find that I now take both less and smaller gear so that I can enjoy the trip.
Tours abroad are usually time-constrained and do not always allow for the perfect angle, set-up, waiting until the crowds disperse, etc.
Now, I try to capture the best pic that I can with the camera that I brung, grin.
This translates into actually carrying on conversations with each other and enjoying meals and the sights together.
I still bring home "decent", for me, pics filled with friends, exotic places, and a boat (cruise ship) full of memories.
Simply stated, now I'm free to contribute to our group experience.
As I said, there is no argument here and definitely not a rant. Just age and experience speaking.
Cat, my apologies, I hope that I didn't "hijack" your thread.

Only $6.49 at Amazon. $2.47 on EBay.

That's a reasonable observation which would be incontestable, all other things being equal. But they're not equal. It's hard to argue with the feeling of freedom one experiences when freed from carrying bulky, heavy equipment. If great images is one's sole reason for traveling, then, sure, bring the full frame camera and the pro zoom lenses. But if *in addition* to getting great images, one travels to see and experience new things, then sometimes compromises are made. I sold my Nikon D800 and D700 with my collection of Nikon f/2.8 zoom lenses because they were weighing me down. I didn't lack the strength to carry two big cameras and a 70-200 f/2.8 that looked and felt like an RPG; I just felt that doing so was encroaching too far into sheer relaxation and enjoyment. So I got a Fuji X-T2 and X-T3 instead and just use their all purpose 18-135 lens and a Rokinon 12mm lens. At home I have Fuji's 50-140 f/2.8 for portraiture and their 16 f/1.4 for wide angle and close-ups. And while traveling if I feel that even the Fuji is hampering me too much, I use my iPhone X. I guess I'm just not a "serious" photographer.

I read a couple references to the Sony HX99V. Didn’t Sony discontinue that camera?

For more info I'd check Ken Rockwell's review at https://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm. I have the Sony Rx100 VI and enjoy the camera. Too expensive for me to update today! Do your homework and enjoy the fruits of your decision. Very Respectfully. ChiefRob
