Posts on UHH drew my attention to the Palouse area of Washington state. When my wife wanted to go to Coeur d'Alene, I decided to go by way of the Palouse. I asked UHH for Palouse tips and received wonderful advice. That done, we set out.
Today's post shows our first views of the sweep of the wheat fields. These views are coming off of I84 in Oregon and cutting toward Palouse Falls. These fields are relatively mild versions of what you will see in later posts, but they were our first encounter with the textures of the Palouse. Today's posts are mainly ripe wheat. Later posts will show the amazing variety found in the fields of the Palouse.
Downloads really help show the textures.

I appreciate those kind words, Stan. Check out Issue #54 of the Photograph America Newsletter devoted to the Palouse. A hogger put me on to it and it is a valuable guide. Only $8 and well worth it.

Thanks, Jim. The area was overwhelming and I will post more shots.
The Palouse, The Grand Coulee, The Columbia Gorge and the Oregon Willamette Valley reveal a huge diversity of geography in the PNW that were carved out by the numerous Missoula Floods that broke through huge glacial ice dams creating the oceans in the Montana area.
I found the study of the Missoula Flood(s)-plural-to be intriguing in the formation of these varied geographies starting in Montana and carving valleys as far as into Northern California. Thousands of years lapsed between numerous of these floods that melted the bottoms out of glacial ice dams and formed the landscape with the floods.
I lived in Coeur'd Alene, Upper Washington, the Southern Willamette Valley in Oregon and travelled the Columbia Gorge considerably.
Beautiful terrain all. Knowledge of the Great Missoula Floods will give great insights into how the PNW came to be formed.
Very nicely done, Mike. All are nicely composed and exposed.

I appreciate those encouraging words, Ken.
These are all very nice, Mike, and I'm looking forward to the next episode. My favorite is #6 with the varied coloring showing the contours of the land. The Palouse is on my list for the future!

Thanks, Carol. The future Palouse posts will show much more variety in texture and color. My next post, however, will deal with the state parks and then I will deal with the beauty of the Palouse.
I remember the area well as my wife’s family has a large wheat farm just north of WallaWalla. As I’m from KY, the first time I saw these fields I thought WOW!!! They’ve learned how to plow mountains in Washington State!! The scale of the fields makes the rolling hills look a lot smaller than they really are. My wife’s uncle rolled his combine over while harvesting (turned at the top of the hill). Still a very beautiful area.....amber fields of grain...as the song says...
Vrey nice series Mike - I like the open expanse of sky.
These really resonate with me. They all appear to be sooc. I tend to think in terms of a final output for printing, so they look unfinished. Some terrific images!
