Setting the time on an iPad

I have two iPads, both run the same version of iOS. Both are configured to set the time automatically, which I'm guessing means that they get the time either from my network provider or some form of location service. Yet, the time shown on the two iPads is consistently a few minutes apart. What explains this?

There are about a dozen jokes to go along with this situation. If only I could think of one.

I just checked it out and I have the same problem. I noted the time on the laptop in my living room...even wrote it down to make sure I didn’t forget it...and made my way thru the kitchen, refreshed my coffee and explained to my wife what I was doing. When I got to the den, I checked what I had written down against the time on my pc and sure enough it was different.

If you google ‘official time’ you will be taken to time.gov where there is an official NIST panel giving the time. Our Naval, Air, military forces need one source for time in order to conduct coordinated operations. The source of the time data is an observatory in Colorado - believe they are now using an atomic clock as primary and star observation as backup verification. Astronomer experts weigh in.

But was it on the same day, IF you can recall?

My laptop and cell match within one minute. Do not show seconds.

My iPad and iPhone agree to the second but my Casio G-Shock watch, that has radio-controlled time, is 4 seconds ahead. This has caused me much concern when using celestial navigation to get around my neighborhood. I’ve developed a spreadsheet to adjust for the difference that I’m willing to share if you have the same problem.

Every two months my Magnavox TV recorder asks me to reset the time manually even though it has been on "auto set" without interruption. Of course I comply (who can argue with aq machine?) I believe it senses a time difference my location in mid-Arizona and the national clock in Colorado. That is because Arizona is farther south than Colorado and, hence is actually moving faster through space than is Colorado. Even though both move at the same rate, Arizona covers more distance in the same length of time.

Unless you live in the Navajo Nation, you don’t adjust for DST in AZ so your recorder just gets confused.

This has nothing to do with time zones, but with the girth of the earth!

BTW my recorder is set for "DST OFF".

My favorite site is: https://time.gov/

It is so beautifully animated.

Thought I would get at least one intelligent answer. Ah, well.
