Greetings, I own a D5300 and was wondering what my next camera should be. It will probably be my last. I also own a ton of DX glass that works on my D5300. Am I totally competent with the D5300, NO. I guess it's gas. I'm eyeballing a D500 but not sure if it's overkill.
Respectfully,
iCE~

If you want to stay with DX, the D7200, D7500, or D500 are excellent choices. You can’t go wrong with any of them. I went from the D5500 to the D7200. No regrets!

My thinking is if you want the D500 and have the money for it then just go for it. I don't think it is overkill at all. I know there are some here that will tell you it is GAS and that if you are still getting good photos with your D5300 then stay with it until you have exhausted all it can give you. I am not saying that is a bad idea. But I am saying that isn't me at all. I have a D800 and love it. I am positive I have not exhausted all it can do for me. I know there are some aspects of the D800 I might still need to look up in the manual to become even more proficient in its use. But I saw a used D4 a few months ago and if I had the money would have purchased it. If you like the D500 I would buy it. But the choice is yours.

I also love my D7100. Higher burst speed seems to be the major advantage of the later models.

At this point in my relationship with my D5300 I'm the limiting factor. So I'll be staying with it! 😐

It depends on what you shoot. If you are into wildlife / birding or sports photography then the D500 is the way to go, but the D7500 is pretty good in that area as well. If its landscapes, people, events, macro photography or just vacation shots you might want to look at the D5600 for value, but the D7500 is the way to go for the improved AF system alone. If you are looking for the best deal possible, you still might be able to pick up a D7200. I love that camera. Even though I have a D850, I still keep the D7200 in my photography go bag.

I have two D500's. It's one serious camera. It has Nikon's best autofocus system. The D5, D500, and D850 are the first Nikons to have a processor dedicated to just the autofocus system. Your D5300 has a pentamirror viewfinder. If you go to a D7xxx series camera or higher, you get a pentaprism viewfinder. The glass prism inside gives a larger, slightly brighter view through the viewfinder. The view though the viewfinder of the D500 is very large - as large as looking through the viewfinder of a full frame camera. I like the joystick controller on the back. It allows me to move the focus point(s) around quickly.

What do you shoot? If you shoot action I'd suggest the D500. If not, go with the D7200.

Try out the cameras weight may be a factor.

Your next camera should be what you think it should be. Think of what you do and what direction you will be going in. Do the research. Buy what you think you should have.

Everyone here I am sure will give you advice. Actually, what you are really looking for is confirmation to spend money on a new camera. I will not give you the pleasure.
I have always been able to make my own decisions. I guess that is part of being an adult. Others are not so fortunate.
I take into account what I like to shoot. Then I look at all the camera's and pick out the camera that is best suited for my style of photography.
