What’s with the SmugMug plugin? Twice now I’ve opened Lightroom to discover that the SmugMug publisher has a question mark. I can re-link the two but all my galleries say “0” for number of pictures. It seems that ”Publish” only works one way...from Lightroom to SmugMug. The galleries are still on SmugMug, but I can’t figure out how to get them to show up in Lightroom.

I have spend hours trying to figure out Smugmug and Lightroom. It's a disaster. Buggy and not intuitive. Good luck.

In Lightroom Library under "Publish Services" double click on the Smugmug header. When the Lightroom Publishing Manager pops up find "Publishing and Syncing". Check off the box for "Sync Folders & Galleries" and/or "Sync Photos" then click on "Sync Now". Note: Syncing Photos takes some time so plan to walk away for awhile.

It might be a security issue since a lot of the plugins for Lightroom that let you publish to Facebook and Instagram were disabled to prevent you account from being highjacked.

Thank you!!! That worked. That item is usually checked but somehow got unchecked! Everything is back now!

EDIT: Well, it mostly worked. I still have two folders that say “0”

I know Facebook was disabled. It didn’t work well anyway, so no loss. I only use Facebook to post pics for the grandkids.

I’ve never used Instagram

The first time I recreated a couple of Smart Galleries. The last time I deleted all the folders and created one new smart gallery (which is actually a duplicate of one I had created previously).

I left all the folders on SmugMug. Now it’s a mess, like you said. But I’m just leaving the duplication on SmugMug.

I just don’t understand how I keep getting that question mark!!!

Although I admit to having both Lightroom and Smugmug, I have never used any direct connection between the two. I much prefer exporting and then uploading as separate operations. Best of luck.

Yup, I think I’ll revert to that method. I export files for every other app I use for my photos.

Count me as one who also exports and uploads. I have done it using the plugin, but prefer the former method.

I use Lightroom to directly upload to both Flickr and SmugMug. Flickr is where I store my photos for public consumption, and SmugMug is where my church hosts its photos (I am a volunteer photographer for my church). I have had to use the Sync option a lot to be able to Publish photos from Lightroom to pre-created Galleries in SmugMug, but it does work. (Church members create Galleries in SmugMug using that tool, and I process photos in Lightroom for upload to them.)

By your own admission, the sync option has to be used frequently. Another reason to upload directly. Plus, I don’t understand why I always have to REPUBLISH all the time, especially for photos I haven’t touched since they were put in the gallery!

I’ve checked “My Preferences” and see no logic for this!!

Since I use Lightroom to post-process my photos, "direct upload" is not really direct. I'd have to Import my photos into Lightroom (in either case) and process them, then Export them back to my computer hard drive; from there I could directly upload them into SmugMug. However, that way I've 2 copies of every photo--one as shot and another as processed, and I've had to do 2 "upload" actions, whereas doing a Publish from Lightroom into SmugMug only requires one action.

As it happens, the new Galleries in SmugMug I upload into are created in monthly batches, so one "Sync" usually suffices to identify all of them to Lightroom. It's not that big a deal.

That was great when it was working and not disappearing.

I did like having the SmugMug plugin because I could create a smart gallery and it would populate automatically and I would just publish it periodically (usually just before I wanted to order pictures from SmugMug). It used to work GREAT. However, lately it has been getting "lost". When I get it back, I no longer have the smart galleries and have to re-create them, plus I have to sync everything. It's a PITA!!

I import all my RAW pictures into Lightroom and process them. I think I'm done with the plug-in though. Much simpler to export the photos I want in SmugMug, import them into SmugMug, then delete those copies from my hard drive, eliminating the duplicate copies you mentioned.

Do you upload DIRECTLY to the SmugMug plug-in?
