While living in Maadi, a suburb of Cairo, in 1945 I was invited to go out in the desert with some friends to find the ruins of Qal at El Gundi. At least that is what they called it. It took two trips before we found it. When a soldier from a nearby tent came toward us, we feared he was there to prevent our going to the ruins, but instead he offered to be our guide. It was quite a hike up to where the ruins were spread across the top of the mesa. The fortress was built by Saladine in the 12th century to protect the Muslim pilgrims on their route to Mecca. Looking down we see the route of those devoted pilgrims, but they didn't have the nice oiled road that we came over.
