These pictures would not be all that surprising, if they had been taken in Florida, but they were taken by a pond in Orrville, Ohio. This is only the second limpkin ever seen in Ohio with the first showing up three days earlier at Mentor Marsh.

From Wikipedia: "The limpkin, also called carrao, courlan, and crying bird, is a bird that looks like a large rail, but is skeletally closer to cranes. It is the only extant species in the genus Aramus and the family Aramidae. It is found mostly in wetlands in warm parts of the Americas, from Florida to northern Argentina."
Yeah, I have photos of them from Florida. I've never heard of seeing any as far north as Ohio. Nice Photos.

Great sighting. I was glad you got it's huge feet in a couple shots. Gary
Great captures ... & exciting that they're so rare in your area. Nice job.
Excellent set. Maybe they are expanding north.

As hot as it's been, who could blame them? If I was able, I would have expanded north a couple months ago!

Nice shots may have to go there.
With global warming now to be an established fact, seeing this bird so far north is a disturbing sign.

Unfortunately it was a two day wonder. It hung around most of the day on July 6 and then was seen for a short time on July 9, but hasn’t been seen since.
What's next? ALLIGATORS?? Climate change anyone???
