I'm not sure why anyone would need a dedicated formatting button on the camera.

Formatting doesn't "erase" the images, just marks the space as being available. (A Low Level Format may.)
The "erase" button does the same thing, it does not "remove" the image, it only removes the directory entry for the image. Data remains.

BTW - I've been deleting images on cards via the computer for ten years with no problems. This too only removes the directory entry for the image(s). I only format NEW cards in the camera.

Deleting images on your SD card from your computer should never be an issue. Reformating your SD card on your computer can be an issue depending on several factors, and is best avoided unless you understand how to do it properly.

Yes, ALWAYS format in-camera before use.
I've not formatted any cards on the computer, only in the camera.
I only delete on the computer.

I always use the menu and always have. I've never had much luck using the buttons so I just got in the habit of using the menu.

Lately, I've been formatting my SD cards through the Menu of my D750. It seems faster, and it's easier to read. With the red buttons, it seems iffy, and selecting card 1 or card 2 makes me read tiny letters. Do any of you use the Menu system to format. Aside from Nikon, I don't know of other cameras that have buttons to format cards.

That's the only way I have ever known, go in the menu and select formatting card , and there you'll go!

Never liked the red button approach. Like you, I find it counter-intuitive. Always did it from the menus on every Nikon I've owned.

Yes, I always format the cards in my Canon DSLRs, the menu system is the only way to format in the Canons.

I find using the menu to be easier. I have Format in "My Menu" in everything but the D7200 which didn't show it as an option for 'My Menu'.

How difficult can it be to format your car in your camera ? That’s where it’s supposed to be done.

Yes, Jerry. Menu system always. I download to my PC after every shoot and Format via Menu before every shoot. Creature of habit, I guess.

What is the issue? So what if the 'format' in camera menu function is a low level format? Are you worried that you will lose your card and someone will find it and recover your files? If this is the case, then attach your card directly to your computer and do a security type of reformatting. Then put it back in your camera and reformat again. Sounds like a complete waste of time.
Unless I am missing something here.
