These are my latest attempts at taking pics of these hummers. It's all just off the deck. They have been cropped and edited but only slightly. They are so far the best I have been able to capture. Please give me honest feedback and thank you.

Well, you asked. Obviously there is a focus problem with most of them. Maybe you can try some of the other focus functions available with the D7100. If you can figure out how to do it the photos would look much nicer without feeders etc. in the frame. Maybe place a branch or something natural looking close to the feeder for them to sit on. Watch the shutter speed. With the D7100 you can up the ISO a bit if needed without worrying too much about noise. Or you could use flash. Off camera would be best but you could try the on camera flash and see what you come up with. A couple of them are pretty good, just keep experimenting until you find a combination that works for you. And remember that the keeper rate for hummers is a lot lower than for a most other subjects. You might try the CH (continuos high speed) function on the mode dial. It doesn't cost a dime to delete what doesn't work.

Thanks CPO,
yes I did ask. Thanks for taking the time to evaluate my pics and to recommend some solutions to the issues you noted. I will definitely attempt to apply those on my next shoot. When striving for excellence you need feedback from expert mentors. Thanks, Fred (Retired 1SG)

Well, Fred, I'm far from an expert but if you look at my past posts, I do have some pretty nice hummer photos. Even if I do say so myself. I shoot with a D7100 too, along with a couple other Nikons, the D7100 is definitely a very capable camera.

Good luck with your future hummer shoots. I'll keep an eye out for new posts.

Thanks for your service.

All very nice, except the first shot looks a bit soft.

You are well-on-your-way to very good work. Keep shooting and try different lighting technique to aid in shutter speed freeze and depth of field on these difficult & speedy little guys. I wish I had more knowledge of how to do them but I do not but some here do and may have better ideas to help you along.

Good luck.
