That's the way they look at it. Unfortunately studies show that view is completely wrong. Where the law abiding citizens are known to be armed the rate of such things is much lower. The other extreme is also clear: Chicago and Washington D.C. with the most restricitive gun laws persecuting law abiding citizens have the worse murder and gun shot results.
Hope doesn't tirumph over reality.

So when the problem is too many guns, surely the solution can't be to get even more guns?

There is no such thing as too many guns. Guns in the wrong hands is a problem. Hollywood glorification of violence is a huge problem. Horrible parenting is a huge problem. Just having a parent is a positive not often seen. Actually enforcing or even attempting to enforce the current gun laws seldom happens. And these ill informed, ignorant clowns continue to demand stricter gun laws and anything else that will prohibit law abiding citizens from protecting themselves against those who could care less about law, life, anyone else's pursuit of happiness or violence.

The Water Tower on Michigan Ave. and the fountain in Grant Park would be two that I can think of. The Museum of Natural History is a great trip, it's always had dinosaurs, but now they have Sue, a T-Rex. If you get a photo of Sue, please post it. You may want to get a shot of the L, and you may get something in Greek Town if you go there to eat....I ate at one place that had a lamb roasting in the window. Good food, too!! Don't forget the lions in front of the Chicago Institute of Art.
Steve........Say hi to Sue :)

When trying to solve a problem it is very important to get the problem right. The problem is too many people getting shot by criminals with guns.
The solution is to get rid of the criminals and their guns, not persecute law abiding citizens needing protection. You'll note that police always arrive AFTER someone is shot. That can never prevent. (Well, usually. New York an obvious exception where the police shot the harmless citizens.)
Check out some actual data. It is clear politicians rarely do.
We have many good restaurants at varying price points. Among my favorites are Piccolo Sogno, Coco Pazo, Mon Ami Gabi and Spiaggia (expensive). Go to the 95th or 96th floor of the Hancock building for a drink. It offers great views and one drink costs little more than the the price of going up to the observatory.
My previous post ignored Hyde Park. That was a big omission.
Two must see places are Millennium Park and the Magnificent Mile and I strongly recommend the CAF boat tour.
Skyline from Belmont Harbor
Be sure to look inside the Cultural Center, which is just across the corner from the Art Institute. It has arches clad in ornamental glass tiles with names of famous people who contributed to culture (philosophers, authors, composers, etc.) spelled out in glass tile. It has a massive Tiffany glass dome and there are exhibitions in some of the areas. When we were there, a very educational exhibit of pioneers of Chicago architecture was displayed. Speaking of architecture, DO take the architectural Chicago River boat tour. The docent does a fabulous job of talking about the architectual firsts in the city. The building on the Navy Pier also has exhibits; when we were there, it was an extensive exhibit of Tiffany glass panels. Go out to the west side to see the Frank Lloyd Wright museum and some of the architecture of the houses in the neighborhood (green line to the west end).

I glossed thru pretty quickly... Try the architectural tour on the chicago river, Also available will be the walking tours on the same subject. Millenium park. You could spend years here photographing all the sites and still wouldn't cover everything the city has to offer. Enjoy your trip.
for street scenes and people, go to rush st....
Not sure if this was mentioned but if you have time for a side trip, take the green line "L" (25 mins) or Metra train (10 mins from Union Station) ten miles west to the wonderful Village of Oak Park. Then visit the Frank Loyd Wright home and studio (Chicago Ave & Forest) and take the walking tour of wonderful Prairie style homes for some excellent architectural shots.
Next stop; the Hemmingway museum and home on Oak Park Ave, north of Lake St.
Great way to spend a day; you could even stay the night at the "Wright Inn" across from the museum. All depends on your interests.
If you let me know in advance, I'll even buy you a beer!
All great advice! Thanks all! My wife and I will take a trip to Chicago after reading about all the sights to take in.
Thanks again!
I heard that a picture of the "bean" with nobody in the frame is quite rare. Also, check out Central Camera, in business since 1899 and they have the first camera they ever sold in the window. A couple of blocks from the Art museum.
Most important have a Chicago Hot Dog and a Chicago Pizza.
Bring some Tums for the hot dog and the pizza.
they are that good.
