Piedmont, WY Ghost Town Kilns

This is a follow up on my post yesterday. These kilns were used to make charcoal for use in smelting and forging operations. Piedmont is Italian for "at the foot of the mountains". The nearby mountains provided timber used in the kilns. The UP Railroad passed through Piedmont and carried the charcoal from Piedmont into the northern Utah area smelters, etc. When the railroad was rerouted through Aspen Mtn. WY, it spelled the end of Piedmont. There was no other sufficient means of transportation for the charcoal.

It is worth your time to read the interesting info boards at the kiln kiosk.
