Research studies show:
Compared to religious people, non-believers are in general LESS prejudiced, anti-semitic, racist, dogmatic, ethnocentric, close-minded and authoritarian.
And in general non-religious people are MORE altruistic and supportive of women's rights, gender equality and gay rights.
Only 2.0% of all prisoners in U.S. jails are atheists.
Murder and violent crime rates are HIGHER in highly religious countries than in secular countries.
Murder and violent crime rates are HIGHER in highly religious states than in less religious states.

And they get far fewer abortions than religious people.

Your 2% number made me think. So I just Goggled to find what percentage of the US population are atheists. Guess what, it's 2%!
It would be therefor wrong for atheists to assume a "holier than thou" attitude because only 2% are in jail. :P

I think the more interesting question is: why are there so many Christians in prison?

Good question thugh I think part of the answer may be in the fox hole or death bed saying, "there are no atheists". I think many claim the label who aren't and many become so after incarceration. That doesn't cover them all most likely but I thik it affects the numbers to a fair degree.
It makes them look better to the parole board - gives them more freedom and outside the cell time - same as going to AA/NA meetings - sure it helps some get their life together but not too many - but one or two is better than none. Not been in prison as an inmate but do a lot of H&I ( hospital & institution) volunteer work for 12 step programs.
If one learns and leads a life of the ten commandments and leave the rest alone they a far better off than not.
Working for me.

You have anything to support your claims, Harvey? Do you think the parole board would be influenced if Charles Manson told them he had seen the light and embraced Jesus?
If not, why do you think they would be influenced by such claims from less notorious prisoners?

He can answer for himself but I think he has hands on experience which is not trivial evidence usually if someone is being honest about it.

In hospitals and institutions, but not in prisons. The discussion has been centered on prisons.
Harvey, in reference to agnostic, of which I am one. Like what my youngest son says ,Religious and atheist are in the same boat . They both know for sure, there is and there isn't a higher power . NOBODY knows for sure about anything !, in that regard. I myself lean toward atheist , but I can' prove it :-)

You are a Weak Atheist. Weak atheism is the rejection of belief in gods, but not an explicit rejection that any gods might exist. This differs from Strong Atheism which explicitly claims no gods can exist.
The two strains of atheism are also known as Positive (Strong) and Negative (Weak) Atheism. The distinction is subtle but thought to be meaningful in atheistic circles.
Me? I don't care whether god exists or not. There are no experiments you can perform that support either position. God is irrelevant.
Probably more Christians coming out of prison than going into prison...just sayin.
