Sony RX10 MIV Button Assignment

I have programmed AF-ON to the Focus Hold button on the side of the camera.I would like that button to be both AF-ON/AE. Does anyone know if it is possible? The camera seems phenomenal so far but getting all the available settings to your individual liking is quite challenging.

Just got the RX100 mark 6 myself and also have tons of questions because of Sony’s crazy menu system.
All of my questions have been answered so far in Alexander S. White, “Photographer’s Guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 VI”.
Got it from Amazon.
Well worth it.

I have the White book and am very pleased with it but haven’t been able to figure out this setting. It may not be possible. Thanks.

Have a look into getting Gary L. Friedman's Book or .PDF
He writes a very good book on every Sony Camera that comes out.
He has made the Menu System very easy for me.
I like having his .pdf icon on my desktop to access with ease when I need it orhave a problem.

I don’t see AE as a choice for any of the programmable buttons or registers.

Further on Friedman, he has a website and blog and does answer email. You could ask him a very specific question and probably get an answer if you own his book.

I don't know of a way to assign both to the Auto Focus Hold button.

This is a section from Gary Friedmans RX10 IV book:
2.4 BACK BUTTON FOCUS SUGGESTIONS
Back-Button Focus (BBF) is like a religion for some people, especially if they are coming from a different camera brand. It's a style of shooting that was very efficient in the early days of SLRs; and although modern AF algorithms now can do the job faster (and most of the time just as accurately), if you grew up using it it's frustrating to use a camera that doesn't have it.
So what is it? Instead of having one button (the shutter release button) perform the job of initiating focus AND taking the picture, BBF separates those functions to two different buttons: focusing is performed by one of the assignable buttons (I recommend the AEL button for sheer physical convenience), and the shutter release button just takes pictures. In use, place your subject in the middle of the frame, press the BBF button, wait for the camera to lock focus, then (optionally) let go of the button. Recompose and shoot all you want – the camera won't try to focus again until you press the BBF button again. You can continue to shoot without the need to refocus before every frame.
Here's how to configure your camera to work this way:

 First, tell the camera not to autofocus when you press the shutter release button: MENU  1  5  AF w/ shutter  Off
 Next, assign AF-On to the AEL button via MENU  2  9  Custom Key(Shoot.)  2  AEL Button  AF On.
 Turn the Focus Mode dial to "S" (Single-shot), and set the Focus Area to "Center"
 Shoot with your special configuration!

I set mine up with the AF-On on the AEL button on the back and I assigned AEL to the Center button and this works really well for me.

Does the AEL actuate, and lock, the exposure of just lock it? If it does both, then the shutter button should only be the picture taker and have no other functionality???? That is what I am aiming for,(excuse the pun).

The AEL locks the exposure at whatever you have it set to.
Another section from Gary's book:

5.19 AF W/ SHUTTER
Menu Position MENU  1  5  AF With Shutter
What it Does De-couples the shutter release and Autofocus Functions when Off.

So that’s what the setting is for. AF w/ Shutter = Off simply allows you to decouple autofocusing and taking of the picture (which normally are assigned to the same button)

I shot this morning with AF w/lock-on wide - area, and I think that may be wonderful either with shutter AF or BBAF.
Thanks

This may help. But it implies that you can only use it for one setting. The Fn button is a good way to go because it gives you quick access to your favorite variables. Another way to go is with the feature that allows an instant toggle to an alternate configuration. I use if for BIF's but you can use it for anything. It's not explained in this link, though.
