Trouble with D850 and Vello Shutterbuddy II

I am headed to a Nation Park which should have perfect skies for star shots. Got out my equipment to practice last night D850 and Shutterbuddy Remote and it seemed to work correctly - I need practice but the equipment was working. Reviewed my shots and determined I was the problem and headed out today to verify. The remote trigger would not work. It is the wired version and something had changed between last night and this afternoon. Each piece of equipment seemed to work correctly but would not work together. Reviewing options for repaid before I leave and there are really not any that would work. Spoke to a guy at B&H and he said it was probably the shutter buddy. Ordered a new one up for quick delivery.

First, a compliment to B&H about the speed of their response and being available. With the number of camera stores dwindling, it is nice to have a go to place.

Second, a question, has anyone else experienced this and what were the results?

I have a Vello Shutterboss II, and use it regularly --either simply as a remote (wired) shutter release, or when programming and shooting time lapse sequences-- on each of my Nikon bodies (none of which is an 850, though). Never had a problem with it.

You wrote that "the remote trigger would not work," which I interpret to mean you were using it simply as a remote release, not as an intervalometer. You then mentioned that "each piece of equipment seemed to work correctly, but would not work together," and that makes things less clear. In order to use the basic release function, it doesn't need to be powered on; in fact, it'll function without batteries, assuming it works at all. That being the case, how could you tell whether or not it 'seemed to work correctly' since there's really nothing to see (i.e., it didn't need to be powered up, so the control panel would not be lit, and none of the other functions would be shown)?

The weak link with the Vello --and others like it-- is the wired connection. It needs to be connected and disconnected to/from the camera body very carefully. Can I assume you've inspected the male and female ends of the plug on the cord and on the camera? Its a really tiny 4 prong plug/body input, but if there's a problem there, you should be able to see where it lies.

The description above will probably not help you, per se, but you might at least be able to tell whether the remote is the problem or things are much, much worse, and that the camera body connection had somehow been damaged.

Thank you for your response.

You are correct in your assumptions. I was unable to make the vello work either with its' basic shutter release does not work and neither do the other functions. The 850 has a more complicated wiring than the other models but I did suspect that is where the issues are. Hopefully the new one works and a trip to Nikon will not be necessary.

I have two other copies used for years with my other cameras without issues.

Thank you again for your response.

Did you try this with another camera or try one of the others with the D850, or are they camera specific.?

Hi Bill Unfortunately the other cameras have different couplings (the 850 has 10 pins, the d7100s have the four pin version) Hope it is the shutterbuddy with the problem otherwise, it gets expensive through Nikon USA.

No price shown (even now), so I ordered by phone. Just received it yesterday, and it works well in wireless mode. Verified Buyer I have used the Vello Wireless Shutterboss on a number of occasions (e.g. for a wedding where I needed second story shots at the same time as shooting at ground level. Wide angle lens on a tripod-mounted 5D Mk IV with the shutterboss at a remote distance of approx. 75'), and it performs well once up and running. Good response to the remote signal, light, and easy to use.

There is just one issue I have experienced several times, which moved this unit from 5 stars to 3: for a reason known only to Vello, the + terminal battery connections are quite cheaply designed and manufactured. They use wire coil connectors recessed a bit for the battery to connect with. However, they occasionally flex too far back into the unit when putting in batteries, and suddenly the unit will not work. If there are no time pressures, you will figure it out, but when under the gun to get your gear set up, toss in the batteries in, try to power up, and suddenly the unit doesn't work, it is crazy making. I ended up pulling the wires out of the recess a bit with a small screwdriver, and they seem to be OK, but now I always need to check them, so just one more item for the list. Be forewarned.

Thank you for the response. My vello is the wired version but as this warning indicates the + battery terminal is recessed (one of them). I tried to make it work but was unable to get any response other than what I was able to get. I will wait for tomorrow's new arrival and hope for the best. Thank you again for the response.
