I inadvertently erased several thousands pictures from an external hard drive. Is there anyway to recover them?
I've used Recurva successfully
Recuva worked for me too!
Did you dump your trash bin? They may still be in the trash!
Several thousand photos and no backup? Shame on you. Good luck.
the external hard drive was the backup but also have pictures om discs but putting them back on a hard drive would be a major pain in the ass

That's why many consider CDs and DVDs to be obsolete storage/backup media.
Backup to MORE THAN ONE hard drive. Save the discs as just an additional backup to hard drives.
Anything that gets deleted on a windows operating system is not really deleted... they go to a repository that is a hidden file for x amount of time...set show all files and go to windows directory.... or google it

Please share with us where this "repository" is located. I do not find any reference to it.
Are you talking about deleted items sitting in the Recycle Bin? When you empty the Recycle Bin, you delete its contents from the computer.
After that, you can only TRY a deleted-file recovery program, like Recuva for example.
As long as nothing has been written to the disk to over-write (alter) the original data, a program like Recuva has an excellent probability of restoring the files. Even better when the files in question are on an external or backup drive where they are not likely to be damaged by normal operating system activity, such as on your C: drive.
