I'm seriously debating between these 2 lens and need some honest info on both of them. I value the opinion of most of the people here, so please help.

Prime lens vs. a slower zoom lens. If you are still confused, look up the definition of “prime lens” and “faster lens” and compare those two with the definitions of “zoom lens” and “slower lens”.

The f4 lens because it is a constant f4 throughout the zoom range

The F4, I have 2 of the F3.5 and they are both not very sharp, actually a little soft.

The answer to your question will vary depending on what is important to you. The answers above are all correct. The f4 is by far the better lense, but the price difference reflects that. If the quality differnce which again is substantial isn't important to you then the variable aperture lense will do. I have the f4 as well as a 16-80 2.8 to f4 on my D500 (essentially the same for DX as the 24-120 f4 is for FX but a little faster on the front end). The question is is it worth it to you.

No contest. The F4 lens is better in every way. The older one is pure junk.

Uh, folks, both are zoom lenses.

And it isn’t “ constant aperture”. It is constant MINIMUM aperture.

And they aren’t “fixed aperture” lenses either but...

Maximum aperture is the term commonly used for the widest opening. https://www.nikonusa.com/en/learn-and-explore/a/tips-and-techniques/understanding-maximum-aperture.html

I don't think the 24-120 f/4.0 is a prime lens.

Thanks to you all for the info. I have the D750 and know that the 24-120 was their kit lens. I looked at one at a local Best Buy store, but did not really evaluate it. Again I appreciate the replys. Thanks!

Hi Dan,
I bought a D750 with the 24 - 120/f4. Didn't use it for 2 years because it was a "kit lens". But needed to document an important family event which occured during both day and night over 11 days. I decided to try it and quickly realized what a good lens it is. It's on my camera now - I use it about half the time. Go for it! If you buy the cheaper one, I think you'll wish you had spent the money for the good one.
Best of luck,
Don
