I was trying to shoot straight down. To keep my feet out of the photo I spread my feet as far apart as I could while at the same time keeping the camera out at arm's length. And benign tremors in my hands didn't help at all.

Looks like what we call "Dollar Weed" or "Pennywort". It can pop up in areas of your lawn that receive too much water (it's an aquatic plant).
