Camera Firmware Update Fail and tethering

I have a Sony a77, which I purchased it in 2012, and then in 2013 Sony put out an update to the firmware. My camera worked fine so I never attempted the update until recently. I tried on my laptop and failed, so I tried on my smarter and faster desktop and failed again. I am not using a Sony USB cable. Could there be a difference in USB cables? I throught that as long as the connectors are correct that one USb cable is the same as another USB cable.

Well the reason I am just now trying to update the firmware is because I am interested in try to tether the camera to Capture One. I don't see a tether driver on the Sony website so maybe I should just forget the whole thing.

What do all you suggest?

This page from Capture One's website seems to suggest that you need an a77 II at the minimum, and you should be using Capture One Pro Sony if you want to monitor in Live View.

As far as cables are concerned, yes, USB 2 = USB 2 regardless of who made it. However, you could have a defective connector/cable, or crud on the connectors that could interfere with a connection.

Regardless, I think your problem is that your camera is not supported.

Thank you very much for taking the time to research and answer me. You are absolutely correct. I see by your link that my camera is not supported for tethering.

Thank you again.

I JUST had that same problem with my Sony a6000. It was a faulty cord. At least in my case. Good luck!

Can you tether through other software from Sony? I wanted to tether wireless instead of by cable, which in my situation, LightRoom can't handle. I ended up using Canon's tether utility dumping the files into a directory that LightRoom was watching and auto-importing from. I don't know if Capture One has this watch directory concept, but it might be worth looking into.

I have updated my a6000 and my a7iii from my Mac. I had to use the Sony cable. I first tries with a generic cable and it did not work. I located the Sony cable and the update worked fine. Just like my iPhone does not like some generic charging cables. Sometimes I have to unplug and turn over then replug in for them to work.

IT DOES MATTER which USB cable you use, even Sony tells you that in the firmware update instructions. Many popular brands of USB cable wont work, yes that is true, it has happened to me. If you don't have the original cable that came with the camera, I can suggest a brand that I know works. (I tried other popular cables and they did NOT work, even expensive ones) but this one works for all my Sony cameras.

Sony's Imaging Edge package of apps is not supported for an A77. It does work on an A77 II but only for for wired tethering. I also tried another free software from Sony to do wireless tethering and although it functioned (Kind of), it did so little of what I needed for wildlife remote camera control that I discarded it. I think it was called Remote Camera Control and I think it even worked on an A 77. You might want to check out what Sony support is offering for free.
It might work for your needs.

thank you for all the replies. I do have the pro version of Capture One for Sony, but I believe the a77 will not tether with any program. I have not been able to find my orginal usb cable from Sony, but since I am not able to tether there might not be a reason to do a firmware update. Photography is my hobby and my ministry, but not an income. If I do decide to get a cable I'll try the link provided by gwilliams6

Thank you all for being a part of Ugly Hedgehog. I didn't know where to turn for answers. This is a valuable learning experience. Note to self - Keep your orginal cables!

The Sony SLT-a77 uses a mini type b connection, so I will continue to search for my orginal cable in case I decide to update the camera.
