I can't contribute to the topic at hand, but wanted to say that it is always such a pleasure to read what burkphoto and amfoto1 have to say on UHH! There are other very good posters too, of course, but I particularly love how you guys carefully break things down, flesh out the background, and fill in the gaps (at least in my knowledge). In addition, the quality of your writing is always top-notch, with excellent sentence structure and flow, not to mention spelling and grammar. As a learner, I greatly appreciate your teaching efforts---and I look forward to all your future posts!

I've had the SP 90mm macro since last fall - I haven't used it much for macro but have found it to be excellent. .
Didn't finish that statement and waited too long to edit it - meant to say that it is excellent as a portrait lens even at the equivalent 135mm on my DX body - I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs at its proper 90mm focal length on a full frame body when I upgrade.

Looking to buy the Tamron 90 mm macro it is. Suppose to be a great lens now Tamron has the 18 to 400 mm lens that is not a macro, but still has good macro capabilities .does anyone have this lens ? How is it for a all around lens? How is the weight?
I have the 90mm macro G2...great lens not only for true macro but also portraits and general photography in that range - great sharpness and contrast. The Tokina 100mm 2.8 might be a less expensive choice for excellent results - focusing may be manual depending on your body since the lens does not have a focus motor.
Don't have the Tammy 18-400, but use the Nikon 28-300 within that range. Zooms with such wide ranges are subject to optical compromises so lately I tend to stick to wide or tele zooms (or primes), not super wide to super tele zooms...but I was almost tempted to get the 18-400.

I have both lenses and am very happy with them.
The 18-400 is a good all purpose lens and I've taken thousands of images with it. It is, however, less than satisfactory in low light, mainly b/c it is not a fast lens. In good light it shines (pun intended!)
I've had the SP 90mm macro since last fall - I haven't used it much for macro but have found it to be excellent. It is currently on a DX body and is the equivalent of 135mm so it will be interesting to see how it performs once I upgrade to a full frame body.

Be careful the 18-400 is for a cropped body and will give you vignetting on full frame body. When you buy lens; buy full frame lens they work on both cropped and full frame bodies.

I know - I currently have three FF primes and the 18-400 will be replaced with a 28-300 when I go full frame. The 18-400 and a DX 35mm are going to be given to my grandson who is saving to buy his first DSLR.

I think it is a good idea to sell your DX to your grandson. the amount is not important but if he spends his own money that he earned; then the camera will have more value rather then giving it to him.

Actually, my D7500 is going to be used as a trade-in for my upgrade - my grandson is only 12yo and an entry level Nikon is more appropriate, as well as much lighter in weight. It is the two lenses that I will be giving him. He's very mature for his age and will probably have the money saved in a year or so - he's already offering to do jobs for his folks and both sets of grandparents!

sounds like a great kid.
He is and we're all very proud of him. We give the grandkids a Coolpix point & shoot when they turn 10 - his brother and sister both enjoy theirs but he seems to have a bit of a passion for photography and is ready to step up to a more advanced camera. I'm looking forward to seeing his progress!
