Canon lens to a Nikon 5300

I’m getting back into photography after a long hiatus and I recently purchased a Nikon 5300 DSLR. Back in the early ‘80s I had a Canon A-1 with a Canon 100-300 lens. Is there an adapter that I can purchase that would allow me to use this Canon lens with my Nikon? What functions would I lose? I would appreciate any suggestion you can give, short of getting rid of my old Canon equipment and buying an expensive new telephoto lens. Thanks.

Do a search on Amazon, there may be something out there.

Get on the B & H website and search for "lens mount adapters"

The Canon FD lenses weren't AutoFocus, of course, but I'm guessing that you would lose all auto functions - the only thing the lens would do on your new camera is pass light through to the sensor.

I was under the impression that without exception Nikon lenses could be adapted (and I have adapters) to a Canon because the distance to the focal plane was longer on the Nikon's. On the other hand the offset on the Canon being shorter wouldn't work on a Nikon.

Short answer--even if you found a way to mount Canon lenses on a Nikon you would lose infinity focus due to the longer register distance of the Nikon. You can mount Nikon lenses on Canon but not vice-versa. You may find an adapter with a glass element to allow infinity focus, but you will lose a significant amount of optical quality.

No offense intended, but, instead of "mickey-mousing" that old lens to that fine camera, for $170 you can get a new Nikon DX AF 70-300 (non-VR) zoom that weighs less than a pound and will fit nicely on your D5300. If you want VR, (which most recommend for a lens that goes out to 300mm), the price will more than double to $375 for a Nikon DX 55-300 that weighs just over a pound. (Do NOT get a newer version AF-P lens, as it will not be compatible with the D5300.)

I currently use some of my old Canon FL lenses on my Nikon D7100. Of course everything is in manual mode
The ones I use most are the 135mm and 200mm both are prime lenses

You can but I am not sure you would want to.
You can buy this
https://fotodioxpro.com/collections/lens-mount-adapters/products/fd-nikf-pro

It would be manual focus, manual exposure settings and no meter. It also has a lens element which may affect image quality.

I got a similar one with different brand, that was given to me from a friend. There is a built in lens to correct the focus distance. It works fine with every manual, but it created a color chromatic aberration. It's all depends on the quality of the lens in there. Good luck.

Are you sure the D5300 cannot use AF-P lenses? I have a D5200 that accommodates AF-P lenses just fine.

I am not sure buying a $30 or so adapter would be a better deal than spending $150 for a brand new 70-300mm. The new lens would support all function on your camera.
