Don't see that anyone has posted this but the search function is a little lacking.

There is a new firmware update for the Nikon D500 that's been available for a couple of weeks now. The firmware release available is V1.20 while the Distortion Control is still V2.017.

Note that the Nikon instructions say to run the 1.20 update twice.

Thanks for the notification. I just downloaded and installed the update. Followed the instructions and ran it twice. It was not clear what might have been going on either the first or second time. Suggest that folks read the instructions carefully before installing...apparently there is the possibility of receiving a message after the first update that could be somewhat concerning if you weren't expecting it. I did not receive the message, however. There were no problems. The "Update" prompt continued to show in the firmware version panel after the second run of the program. I deleted the file from my SD card and the message went away. All completed in about 15 minutes.

Seems to be a pretty important update...fixes a problem with occasional camera hangup when shooting in high speed continuous mode and another in which the camera will not power off when the switch is turned to the "Off" position.

It also addresses some wifi issues from what I understand. I saw a German YouTuber saying it fixed wifi but didn't understand him.

I think it makes SnapBridge work with WiFi. I don't use wireless communication to talk to any of my cameras, so didn't pay too much attention to that part of the description.

Me neither. I stick my media into card adapters and copy straight to my working hard drive directory for sorting & classification.

Before I run any firmware up date I call Nikon technical support to see what it is for. Most updates are meaningless to me and the functions I use, so I don't bother. If it is something that will effect the way I shoot (rare) I will then download the update.
Just because Nikon issues an update, it does not mean you MUST download it.

The download page spells out exactly what changes each update performs. That's probably where tech support people get their information.

That is only if you were not up to date. If updating from 1.15, once is all you need.

They even put it in red:

Updating from “C” Firmware Versions 1.00 through 1.12 to Version 1.20

You can also find out on their website. I agree about the usefulness so I don’t update right away either. Especially if it’s WiFi related

The D500 problem happens to me occasionally. Very exasperating when it does.

As stated above, you only need to run it twice if you are on an older FW. That is a reason for me to keep my FW up to date.

I only ran it once and it worked fine.

This does not have the update to make the XQD slot compatible with CFExpress which I was hoping for.
