RAW Converter for Panasonic SR1

I was at a local camera demo day and got to use the new Panasonic SR1, their new full frame mirrorless. I have no way to read the RW2 files, too new for Lightroom. I went to the Panasonic web site and found a file, S1R_V11.bin, that is supposed to read the files or convert them. I am not familiar with the .bin suffix. I am attempting to red the files in OSX. Any ideas?

I think you got the wrong file. Generally the *.bin files are firmware files.

Thank you for the clarification. I seem to remember now that you put the .bin file on a SD card to update the camera firmware. I'll look again at the Panasonic web site for what I need.

You have not stated whether you purchased a Panasonic SR1. If you did, the box may have contained a CD or a link to Panasonic software that may read the .RW2 files.

I stated in the initial post that I got to use the SR1 at a local camera demo day. As such, I did not have access to the CD. If I had, I wouldn't have had to post.

I have not been able to find the required software on the Sony website.

On this page of Panasonic's site is a link to Live Chat (open M - F).

Thank you for the idea of using Live Chat. I'll give a try on Monday.

Adobe's Camera Raw now supports Panasonic S series files.

Why would you be looking at the Sony website?

.bin is a binary file. It’s typically the format Panasonic uses for firmware updates.

Do they ship SILKYPIX with the S1/S1R?

Update ACR...

Thanks for the head up on using Camera Raw, I managed to convert the RW2 files to DNG and import them into Lightroom.

I used to do that with the NEF files of my Nikon Df when I still used PS CS2. I found it's not as good as opening the NEF directly in PS when I upgraded to PS CC. Conversion to DNG before opening it in ACR isn't as good as opening the NEF directly with free Nikon software. So if I were you I would still try to look for Panasonic software.

I used Panasonic's Live Chat and it was a waste of time. Panasonic does not offer software (on OSX anyway) that will allow your computer to read the camera files. The Panasonic told me that the computer manufacturer (hardware/operating system?) has to provide a plugin. It wasn't clear to me what the representative was talking about.

Apple issues quarterly updates to MacOS that add raw profiles for new cameras (among MANY other things). Adobe does the same thing, on a periodic basis. It is not unusual to wait a few weeks after the release of a new camera to have OS or software support (or both) for the new body.
