Do you use an "L" bracket? Don't know how often I would use an "L" bracket but I am considering purchasing one. Anything to look out for other than the access to ports on the left side...

Don't know how often I would use an "L" bracket but I am considering purchasing one. Anything to look out for other than the access to ports on the left side of the camera and access to battery compartment. Recommendations for use on a Nikon D500 or D600.

I thought I put this in the discussion forum and put it here by mistake. Is there a way for me to delete this and repost in the correct form?

They are permanently attached to all my cameras, except for my Pentax 645 because its "sorta" build-in with that one! Yes, all access ports/battery compartments are easily accessable with them attached. I have several, Kirk, RRS and PMG, all are of good quality, but the PMG, I like best, it has the best build quality and its part of a modular system/set-up, so its the most versatile of them!

L brackets are certainly convenient when you want the camera in portrait orientation - this keeps the bulk of the weight over the center of the ball head rather than becoming a lopsided affair that could even fall over it tapped the right way (depending on tripod). Also, on occasion I will use a sturdy tabletop tripod with an RRS clamp, and after attaching the camera with the side clamped in brace the camera against a wall or tree or whatever's handy. If i didn't have an L bracket then this would be nigh on impossible (at least to get a landscape orientation)

I keep them on all my cameras.

I have them on both my dslr’s. I second the recommendation of PMG (Pro Media Gear). Great build quality, they have ones that also work with battery grips.

Prices for commercially made "L" brackets are all over the map !

You CAN make your own ......

If you prefer to use anything other than a ball head or 3-way tilting head and you want to go vertical, then an "L" bracket becomes VERY attractive. They are especially attractive when using pan/tilt only fluid video or gimbal heads.

I have them on all my cameras, either RRS or Kirk. Install once. Leave on always. Zero thought to then attaching to tripod or mono. Minor added benefit, metal L bracket takes most of the scrapes and knocks, not camera body.

Exactly...I don't leave home without one!

I'm partial to RRS and Kirk.

Have not been since we were there - but HIGH on my list seeing what Mark Smith does there !

I'm flying in tomorrow...short trip and was going to do a first trip to Lake Apopka, Wildlife Drive is open Sunday, but, but... I'll PM you in a few minutes.

I think I told you that I went through there with Mark last fall, but the Red Tide was bad news and we bailed.
