What does aspherical do for you? Is aspherical relevant for prime lens as well as zooms?

Here is a link to Canon's explanation:

It's not really a new concept.

Aspherical lens contains extra elements with in the lens, that allow light rays to converge at a single point (Focal point) along the focal length. This prevents stray light rays from defracting (bouncing} off the walls of the lens, cuts noise out! but more important (better control) so that the light rays strike the center of the pixel well. Greater focus less distortion.
a win win

In many ways, the simplest optical surface to manufacture is a section of a sphere. But this is not a perfect imaging air/glass interface - its major defect is in fact called "spherical abberation". Corrections are most often achieved by using multi lens systems. Alternatively, specially contrived non-spherical (aspherical) surfaces can be designed to improve the situation for a single lens.

Shortest of the short. Aspherical lens, not spherical, reduces chromatic aberrations, and ocular distortion, such as leaning buildings in wide angle shots. Lens Good UGH, NUFF said.

I tell my students that if they want the best lens/camera they should look for the aspheric designation on the lens!
