I was just in Microsoft News in Windows 10.
Being a history buff, I came across one of those "tests" and proceeded to take it to see how well I would do.
100+ questions later with only 3 more to go there is this BEEP and "Windows 10" popup warning me that my version was lacking a critical update that I needed to install.
I immediately hit CTL-ALT-DELETE to launch TASK MANAGER to kill the WINDOWS NEWS program to clear the message.
I've spent the last 30 years of my life as an IT Manager and CIO, so my instincts just kicked in.
Had I clicked ANYTHING in that popup, I likely would have corrupted my machine. Even that big "X" in the upper right corner! Unsuspecting newbies, novices, computer "users" don't stop to think or realize that whoever programmed the popup can program that "X" to do whatever THEY want, including install the same virus as the "INSTALL" button they are trying to get you to click! BEWARE!
They (the bad guys) are counting on YOU to not think before you click. That click can be fatal. And they are very good at making those popups look real and official.
ANYTIME you get a suspicious popup, CTL-ALT-DELETE is your friend and make it INSTINCTIVE. Go to TASK MANAGER and kill ALL INSTANCES of the program you are running where the popup occurred, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Edge, whatever. NEVER CLICK ANYTHING IN THE POPUP WINDOW.
Once you kill the program, it is a good idea to do a full virus scan just to be on the safe side.
I repeat - make CTL-ALT-DELETE your INSINCTIVE RESPONSE TO AN UNEXPECTED POPUP!
You won't regret it.
