When the photographer cancels at the last minute

Received a call at noon that a photographer that was supposed to do prom pictures for a family friend cancelled. Prom was at 6:00 that evening. So I did their pictures. Since I retired my way of giving back to the community is doing pictures without charging. I no longer have a business license or a permit to collect sales tax and don't want to face the penalties for charging anyway.
First picture is in front of a bell tower, second in front of the old jail. Both are popular locations for prom pictures in this community.

In retirement I find that stepping in at an emergency is appropriate and fulfilling. We have a wealth of experience and we can use it when necessary. Good for you, too.

Just curious. What was the reason the photographer cancelled? Did he get a better offer? What do you do in cases like this?

I don't know why they cancelled. But in a small town like this word will get out about it and probably have negative repercussions for them.
