An excellent camera and very nice shots! Is it really leaf shutter? (I saw the flash sync was either 1st or 2nd curtain).

Cheers

Leaf... no need to sync...will take a full flash up to 1/2000. It also has a built in ND filter.

Understood, but the manual says synchronization is selectable to 1st or 2nd curtain sync, which sure sounds like a focal plane shutter with curtains to me. Perhaps the manual is wrong or it’s a misnomer. Either way, cool camera!

Leaf Shutter: Balancing Flash

"Technicalities of the leaf shutter... here's the big takeaway: with the X100F's leaf shutter, you can use flash at a shutter speed up to 1/2000. With a regular shutter, your flash sync speed is limited to 1/250. That's a big difference!

Practically, this means you can use flash to smooth out shadows in the brightest sunlight at f/2 without your frame being totally blown out. It also has the added benefit of being whisper-quiet, complementing the X100F's natural stealth."

.. and:

"When was the last time you took a photo using a DSLR? That distinctive 'ka-THUNK' can be heard from miles away. Mechanical shutters are loud, and while the X100F's leaf shutter is extremely quiet, Fuji one-upped themselves by offering an electronic shutter for truly silent captures.

The electronic shutter isn't without its drawbacks. You can't use flash with it, you're liable to get 'rolling shutter' artifacts if something moves quickly across the frame, and it renders artificial light unpredictably.

So long as you keep these three detriments in mind, it's a wonderful option for discreet street, event, or portrait photography."

Hope this helps you understand the leaf, and electronic shutter this camera has...

Believe me, I do understand leaf shutters (I have cameras with them), and I have a Fuji X-E2, so I understand both the difference between electronic and manual shutter (and the rolling shutter issue). The reason for my question is I was considering this particular camera for my wife, reading the specs, and noticed the 1st and 2nd curtain flash syncs in the spec (and in the menu) - maybe a misnomer in that they really mean at the beginning and end of the shutter opening.

Btw, as I’m sure you know, DSLRs are not limited to their specified sync speed - HSS (high speed sync) allows you to shoot at faster speeds with reduced power multiple flashes. Either way, as I said before, cool camera.

Cheers

Look on youtube for more information... https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Fuji+X100F

The sync is like you described. At the beginning or end of exposure up to 1/2000. An example would be f/2.0 in full sun, 1/2000 using full flash.

HSS is a multiple burst at 1/4 power and uses much more energy.

This will allow multiple or off camera flash as well at full power without a sync speed limitation of 1/200...

I use two Canon 5D MK4's with the best glass with 5- 430 RXIII's for my normal routine, but finding many more uses for the X100F every day.
