Why so tall?

I have no idea why these grew so tall except for the fact that they are in woods dirt that hasn't been touched for 30 years. I have lots of these in my yard, but I didn't plant these there.

Frequently plants grow taller trying to get more light. They are pretty.

Eleanor, I believe Carol nailed the reason. The reason this flower blooms early is to avoid anything from blocking it from the sun.

This area gets full sun every day. I took this shot in late afternoon.
