Years ago, an SLR came with a 50mm lens, which would give a normal, real world view. For several different cameras, that was my go-to lens. I had a W/A and a tele, but that 50mm was my everyday shooter. Now, I use a 28-300mm lens on my D750. Do any of you rely on the standard-view lens for general photography - a 35mm or 50mm?

Mostly when using an AE1P. Not so much a DSLR because I have a better lens selection available.

For many years I also used nothing but a 50mm. I now have numerous lenses, however three yrs. ago I purchased the 17-50 2.8 Tamron and I find myself using it for 90% of my photos. It is a extremely sharp lens covers most of the things I shoot.

Only as a light compact back up lens when on vacation (a 35mm f/2).

Only when I'm using my Rolleiflex or Super Ikonta!

When I was younger and shooting 35mm most of the time, I found that I used my 35mm much more often than my 50, due to the kind of shooting I was doing. Zooms have improved so much, that I now use them more often than not.

Normally the things that I'm interested in are not really covered by a "normal" lens. I carry a 70-300mm or the 24-120mm that was bundled with my D810 when I got it. Both are sharp and serve me well for the things I happen on.

I do use the 50 F/1.4 on a full frame, but not that often. I love the Nikkor 35mm F/1.8 on the D7200. It is small, light, and sharp as can be.

I’m very happy on most of my commissions (portraiture, candid sports, and 24+ hour sports events) with taking a couple of Canon EF50mm f/1.2L USM lenses, paired to either 5D Mk IV or 1DX Mk II bodies (2nd set is custom configured for B&W, and insurance... never yet needed!). Many of the critical moments that I capture (and my competition doesn’t) occur at night or in very low light. As flash photography is banned at 99% of these events, a fast lens is essential. I’m confident with this lens.

I use a Tamron 45mm f/1.8 SP VC lens on my Nikon D750. It gives approximately a 43 degree angle of view. That's close to the angle of view of a human eye.

Years ago I used to look at what I wanted to shoot and figures if I wanted wide, normal, tele. (Had all primes.)
Now I just use my 18-200 and compose in the viewfinder, paying little or no attention to what focal length is used. I can see the effects, wide / tele, as I zoom in/out for composition.

I have a number of lenses, but mainly use a 50mm f/1.8.
