Check the AF/MF switch below the lens release on your D750. Is it set to AF?

No AF contacts on that lens so that would not matter at all.

The 35/70 is screw drive af. If you turn the screw the lens should focus and since it does on the 500 so that’s not the likely cause. If you turn the screw in the mount the focus ring should turn freely. Don’t bind it up when checking. So fingers off the focus ring. The likely issue is with the body as mentioned above. Sorry but I don’t know how to check the body screw except to check af or manual switch. If you have a different screw drive af lens you can mount that to check the body’s function. Seems a process of elimination is in order. The 35/70 is a great lens. Good luck. I like mine certainly.

Thank all of you for the help. It seems the problem is in the auto focus system of the D759 so back it goes. thanks again - Bill

The 35-70 D lens DOES NOT contain a focusing motor. I know that the D500 will accommodate it, not sure if the D750 will (never owned one). Great lens!

There is a focusing motor in the D750 body.
Sounds like a problem with the OP's body.

This is an old film era optic that has rather poor acuity...

Please consider the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR which generates commercial quality imagery...

https://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Nikon/Nikon-AF-S-NIKKOR-24-85mm-F35-45G-ED-VR-mounted-on-Nikon-D800E---Measurements__814

I sold my af-nikkor-35-70mm-f2-8d to B&H for close to what I paid for it...
The only thing going for it was it's "trick" macro for shooting wedding rings...

btw, I wanted to love that old lens but it is a dog... sorry

The new 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 is a excellent optic and a real workhorse for a wedding shooter...
Keep in mind that "fast" lens are so yesterday... the dynamic range of nearly all FF Nikon cameras will give you at least several stops (or more) and the 24-85mm has excellent VR

All the best on your journey itsbill....
