I don't suppose there is a way to reformat/erase DVD-R discs once they have something saved on them?

DVD-RW, yes. DVD-R, No. But let me ask...does your friend know that what was being saved to the disk was actually written to it and finalized? There are several steps burning a disk, and until it's finalized, it may be possible to still use it. You can look at the disk and see if it has actually been written. Look near the hub. That's where writing starts.

A dumb & bumber question - for the cost of a DVD R or DVD RW why would you care? Just use a new one.

I'm presuming that the question is more around what information might be on that disk rather than really being worried about the cost. Or maybe that we are talking about a big stack of disks.

B&H has 100 Sony for $19.99 (sure even better deals available) so even if it could be done why go thru time/trouble? If there is something on them your "friend" doesn't want anyone to see I understand a hammer or pliers is a good way to erase/reformat. <grin>

Hold on guy’s - Google maps - Stickney, SD is really really rural. Micro Center or Best Buy is NOT a short trip. So I’m really understanding the question to REUSE a disc. Not possible with a CD-R. OK, I live in Metro Atlanta (take Amazon away) there is a Micro Center 1/4 mile from me. Not to mention, that I bought a 100PK of CD-R and a 25 PK of CD-RW years ago (I have plenty left), but the cost of that stuff is probably steep where the OP is located. Ordering on line is probably the best alternative. Heck, I rarely use a CD - USB tumb drives are my preferred medium to store or send bulk data / photos.

No. One of the big reasons I went from DVD-R to flash-drives. They hold more stuff, are "editable", and can be fairly cheaply bought from Amazon.

Thanks everyone for your replies!!! Yes I know they are pretty cheap to buy and we do have a local Wal-Mart. To clarify..I was making DVD's for our local GBB team of a video slideshow I had put together for them after they took 3rd in State this year. The format that was saved to the DVD was an MP4, which works great when viewing on computers, but not DVD players. Of course I didn't realize my "DUMB" mistake until I had 14 DVD's processed. So...it was like I said a dumb question to which I already knew the answer..but I really do value everyone's answers on this forum so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask the experts out here! Thanks again everyone!! I'll be off to Walmart soon!!
