Hi I have just brought a Canon 5D mark ii. Just wondered if there are any good trips for wildlife shoots. I got the 24-105. EF lens and I am thing about a 100-400. EF II. USL. to go with it Would anyone know if that would be a good choice ?
Hi Jerry. Thank you. That looks like just what I need I have taken photos most of my life with a. Canon. A1. Then a 500D. DSLR. but I had always want a top camera. So books like this will help in many ways Thank you
The 100-400L II is an excellent lens and a much better choice for wildlife than the 24-105. Regarding tips, investigate back-button focus and continuous AF. Given the limited number of AF points provided by the 5DII, plan to use the center point that is the most sensitive on this model.
Hi GCH CANON Thank you for your tips. I got the 24-105 as a lens to start with which would cover that end lower down. But thanks for your other tips on AF. and focusing points

The 24-105 is a wonderful lens, but too short for anything small at distance. The 100-400 II is much larger and more expensive, but also the tool more appropriate for "wildlife" as well as airshows and even macro given the short focusing distance and zoom. Welcome aboard!

Welcome to the forum. I just came back from "Out of Africa" in Camp Verde, Arizona. I flew into Phoenix. I took a photo tour.
That 100-400 II zoom lens is excellent on a 5D, and also plays well with the Canon 1.4x III TC, giving you a 560mm possibility! Wonderful for wildlife, especially birds.

Alas, the 5DII will not autofocus with the 1.4x extender at f/8 ....

Another option you may want to consider is either the Tamron or the Sigma 150-600. I had considered the Canon 100-400 and may still purchase it later but I went with the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary for the price, about half the cost at the time, and love the lens.
Consider the Sigma 100-400mm zoom lens as a worthy alternative to the higher-priced Canon 100-400mm lens.
I own and use the Sigma 100-400mm lens. It produces very good images.
My 2 cents.

Thank you Charles Just a point. Does the Sigma. 150-600 have good auto focus working with the 5D. Mark ii
I don't have any personal experience with the 5DII. Mine is a 5DIV and it works well. Others have asked the very same question on the B&H website, https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1082154-REG/sigma_150_600mm_f_5_6_3_dg_os.html, and the response has been that it does. If you are interested in this lens, I recommend that you contact B&H directly and talk with them. They will be able to give you a more definitive answer with all the technical caveats, if any.
If you have a local camera store near you, stop by with your camera and try the lens out. Most camera shops will have a rental policy to which you could take the lens out for a test drive.

At 3AM as I answered your question, I neglected to also welcome you to the forum. My apologies.
