Howdy all
I'm at the point where I need to add another printer to the "fleet" The nice part about my event printers is that they are dye sub printers with the film that never expires or dries out.
I'm thinking seriously about getting the new IP60 printer from Primera which is a dye based ink instead of the rolls of film. My off season is about 4 months, because I primarily work in a few local barn reception halls, and it's too dang cold for weddings in a barn in December.
So, anyone out there know the proper way to store a printer so the heads don't dry out? I don't mind replacing the ink cartridge, it's like $45, but I don't want to have an $800 printer bite the dust after one season.
Before you ask, I did contact Primera, but all I got was a form letter about the advantages of the printer. I downloaded their manual, and there's nothing about storage there, so I'm just wondering if there is a standard way to protect a dye based inkjet? If not, I may just get another dnp printer. I just liked that the IP60 prints a 4x6 in 7 seconds, which is even faster than the DS-40

I actually spoke to Primera and they sent me some sample prints. I was honestly blown away, I soaked one in a water filled baggie for about an hour with no ill effects, The only way I was able to damage it was to lick my thumb and put it on the print until it dried, then pulled my thumb away. No color on my thumb, but it left a perfect "police quality" thumbprint in the finish. When I ran water over it for a while, though. the thumbprint went away.
This will be a game changer for me. I'm going from 20 seconds to get a print, to 7 seconds. My 4x6s will cost 12 cents each, and I'm getting $2 at my next photo booth event.
If I want to pay a little more, I can print on stickers, or magnets, but from my research around here, people won't pay any more for the stickers/magnets, than they will for regular paper, so I'm keeping my margins higher by just going with paper.
Between paper, 2 inks, and the printer, total investment will be about $1000 direct from Primera. (amazon is higher) My first event early next month should just about pay for itself.
If you can keep your printer set up, print something once or twice a week - I just do a nozzle check on my epson P400.

Quick, interesting note. The Impressa IP60 actually will clean it's own heads if just left plugged in, it knows if it's been too long, and will do a cleaning without me having to remember.
The more I use this printer, the more I like it.
So how is the overall quality of the prints?

Really good, very impressed with the printer, and the ink is pretty color fast even when put in water, but don't try a "smudge" test immediately after printing, it takes a few minutes to "set" or you will end up with a ruined photo, and a dirty thumb. (not different than I expected on glossy paper, but you know I had to try)
Talk to Primera and they will send you a sample kit of their papers, and magnetic or adhesive paper.
You can torture the samples, and they hold up really well.
