Carl - Nice captures, especially #1. Have you considered adding a little speedlight fill flash? Dark areas could use a little extra illumination.
I just purchased a "Better Beamer" (speedlight extender) to use with my 300-mm lens, just for shooting hummers.

I use my" Better Beamer" for my nearly all my birs photography, esp. in the woods.

It enables the light from your flash to be magnified and light goes further.
